Use it as a screen saver

This address plays the slide show by itself: no button to press, no music, no pointer, no progress line, a new picture every 20 seconds, the caption gone after six. It fills whatever window it is given, so make the browser full screen. It works in any browser.

On a Mac

Nothing to install: open the address in Safari and choose View → Enter Full Screen (⌃⌘F). You start it yourself; it is not the system’s idle screen saver, and the Mac’s own display sleep still wins.

macOS cannot show a web page as its screen saver by itself. A small free program, WebViewScreenSaver (someone else’s open-source work), is reported to do so on some versions of macOS — macOS 15, and macOS 26 up to 26.3.1 — and to show a black screen on macOS 26.4 and later, as reported when this was written (October 2026). Try it if you like: macOS will refuse it the first time because its maker is not a paid Apple developer (System Settings → Privacy & Security → Open Anyway); then in Screen Saver (inside Wallpaper on newer macOS) choose it under Other, press Options, paste the address and give it the time -1 so it stays.

On Windows

Open the address in your browser and press F11 for full screen; F11 again leaves. Windows has no screen saver that shows a web page. To have it start by itself when the computer is idle you need a helper such as Lively Wallpaper (free, in the Microsoft Store — a large program that must stay running in the background); its Screen Saver guide has the steps.

On a television, a tablet or a wall screen

Open the address in the browser and make the browser full screen (on an iPad, tap AA in the address bar → Hide Toolbar, or Share → Add to Home Screen and open it from there). For a wall screen or a picture frame use https://www.irenabyss.com.au/slideshow/?kiosk instead: the same show, and once you tap the screen or press a key it asks the screen to stay awake — Safari and the iPad need that tap, and a note on the picture tells you if the browser will not allow it. The address must be opened directly: it cannot be embedded inside another page.

To change what it plays, add to the end of the address, joined by &: #theme=mountains (or forests, rivers, coast) · speed=60 (seconds, 4 to 600) · captions=0 · lite=0 (sharper pictures, about four times the data). For example …/slideshow/?saver#theme=coast&speed=60. Running all day it fetches about a megabyte a minute until the pictures are in the browser’s cache.
